Safe Enough to Let Go

01

The Energy

I've been thinking a lot lately about confidence. The word comes from con- (with, completely) and fidere (to trust). To be confident means to trust yourself. And what I've noticed in my own body is that my moments of self-doubt bring out the shy little girl inside me. The one who didn't have much of a voice. The one who so badly wanted approval that she learned to make herself small, adaptable, pleasing.

Which makes me think of the myth of Sedna, the Inuit goddess of the sea. In one version, her father throws her from a boat, and as she clings to the edge, he cuts off her fingers one by one. She sinks to the ocean floor and becomes the most powerful goddess of all - controlling the animals, the food, the abundance. But she had to let go first. She had to stop clutching.

And I consider what we're all still clinging to, as a collective. Old family patterns. Patriarchal systems that told us what success and happiness should look like. The limiting beliefs we inherited before we even knew we had a choice. The inner child's grip on needing approval, needing to prove we're enough.

This full moon energy is inviting us to get really honest with ourselves. What happens if you stop fighting to hold on? What if what you're clinging to has lost its luster and you're just afraid to admit it? What if letting go of your outdated beliefs around safety is the path to your greatest fulfillment?

You can want something and be terrified of it at the same time. You can be excited about the new way of existing and scared out of your mind. The idea that you have to choose - that you can only be in love or fear - might be the real cage. What if both are true? What if wanting change and being afraid of change can exist in the same nervous system, at the same moment?

That's not contradiction. That's being human. That's the little girl and the woman, existing together, learning to trust each other, being confident in their gifts and their worth.

The Teaching

Your nervous system's job is protection. It learned a long time ago what kept you safe. Maybe you internalized and accepted messages like: Hold on. Don't trust. Prove your worth. Earn approval. Keep quiet, be adaptable, be pleasing - and maybe, just maybe, you won't be abandoned.

That system worked. It kept you alive.

But the nervous system can't distinguish the difference between a threat and an outdated belief. It doesn't know that the patriarchal system telling you what success should look like is no longer serving you. It doesn't understand that the family pattern you inherited isn't protecting you anymore, it's drowning you. To your nervous system, letting go of those beliefs feels the same as getting thrown off a boat in the middle of the ocean.

So you cling. You grip. You white-knuckle the edge even as the water pulls at your ankles.

And then something interesting happens. You start to want something different. Your bones start to feel the pull toward a new way of existing. Your body gives you signs. It knows what it needs. But at the exact same moment, your nervous system is screaming danger. You're not safe enough to want this. You're not stable enough to change. What if you fail? What if you're not enough? What if you end up losing your fingers in spite of your clinging?

We've been taught that this is a contradiction. That fear is saying, "STOP!" That desire and terror can't occupy the same space. So we choose: we suppress the wanting to manage the fear, or we override the fear to chase the desire. Either way, we're at war with ourselves.

But what if they're not opposites? What if you can feel the pull toward something and the terror of it, at the same time, in the same breath? What if that's not a sign something's wrong - it's actually the signal that something meaningful is happening?

The nervous system doesn't need you to be fearless. It just wants you to be safe enough. And sometimes, safety doesn't look like holding on. Sometimes it looks like knowing that you can let go and still survive. That you can want the new way and feel the old fear. That both the little girl and the woman can exist in the same body, learning to trust each other. That's where the real reclamation begins. In the trust fall.

The Invitation

This week, I invite you to get really specific about what you're clinging to. I bet you already know at least one thing. Maybe a few. Bonus points if you already feel uncomfortable with this suggestion.

I'm not talking about a general scan. Not "my old patterns." I mean the actual thing(s). The belief about what you need to do to be worthy. The family dynamic you keep recreating even though you hate it. The way you perform competence to earn safety. The idea about what your body should look like, what success should feel like, who you should be.

Find the one that has your knuckles turning white. The one that you feel in the pit of your stomach. The one you really don't want to admit is true. That's the thing.

Now here's the experiment: can you let your metaphorical grip soften just slightly - maybe 15% - without letting go completely? Not because you're ready. Not because you're brave. But just to see what happens when you release just 15% of the pressure.

Notice what comes up. Does your nervous system scream? Does shame arrive? Does the old voice say "if you loosen this, everything falls apart"? Don't override it. Don't push through. Just notice. That's your system telling you it still thinks it needs to protect you this way. It's okay, it's just doing its job. Freedom here to thank it for its service.

And then try pondering this. Can you want something different and be terrified at the same time? Can you soften your grip and still be holding on? Can both be true?

This is the trust fall. Not the dramatic leap. The millimeter shift. The nervous system learning that safety and change can coexist. That you don't have to choose between the little girl's fear and the woman's desire.

And if you do find yourself ready to let go - if your grip releases - notice what happens next. You don't disappear. You don't drown. You transform. But you get to decide when. Your body gets to decide when. Not your fear. Not the old system. You.

That's the reclamation. That's the goddess rising from the ocean floor.

Start with 15%. Breathe through it. See what your nervous system learns. See where it helps you reclaim your confidence.
