Fuel and Borrowing
The Energy
This week I said yes to everything. Every class, every request, every chance to be of service. All of it, things I love, which is what made it so hard to see.
My body started fighting something off midweek. My energy started dipping and I picked up extra classes anyway.
When the work you do in the world drains you, the body's 'no' has a villain to point at. But when work fuels you, the 'no' has nowhere to land, and stopping to rest starts to feel like betraying the thing you love. So the yes keeps going, and the body finds the only voice it has left: headaches, muscle soreness, brain fog.
Excitement and exhaustion can feel almost identical in the nervous system. Charged, quick, alive. From the inside, fuel and borrowing sometimes sound the same.
The Libra new moon arrives Saturday, with Venus still retrograde, and here we are asking what we love and what that love quietly costs us. Dark first. Whatever merges, merges there.
Which two parts of your life are pulling at each other, and what if neither has to lose?
The Teaching
Many of us have learned to treat a pull like a problem. Two things want opposite outcomes, so we try to end the tension. On one pole, control it: tighten the schedule, push through, keep going. On the other, escape it: numb out, scroll, ignore the call and pretend it's fine.
Both buy a minute. Neither resolves anything.
I've been working with a new tarot deck this week which renamed the card traditionally called Temperance to Art. Personally I found this rename significant and powerful. Temperance reads as restraint, hold yourself back. Art reads as transformation. Fire and water, light and dark, not kept apart and not averaged, but blended into something that wasn't in the room before.
A conjunction works the same way. Two bodies meet and a third thing is born that belongs to neither. Not half of one and half of the other.
So integration isn't compromise. Rest and service don't each give up half. Something else has to form, and I don't have the articulation for what that is for me right now. I'm in the middle of it, and yet it's clear a newness is coming alive.
That part can't be handed over. The third thing isn't built from either side's demands. It arrives when the tension is held long enough. The nervous system doesn't settle because the pull stopped. It settles when the pull is allowed to stay and the breath gets long enough to hold both.
In the body it can feel like tightness and openness at the same time. When we breathe into both and wait, there's a shift, and it's rarely what either side was asking for.
An estuary has a river on one side and ocean on the other, and in the middle, water that is neither.
Neither has to lose. Something has to be born.
The Invitation
Give yourself three minutes, wherever you are. There's nothing to get right here.
Tune in. Feel your feet on the floor, or your back against whatever surface is supporting you. Take a few slow breaths, invite the exhale to be a little longer than the inhale.
Find the tension point. Where does the pull live in your body right now? The place that's braced, buzzing, or holding on. Name the sensation, not the story.
Find the other pole. Where is the body already quiet? If nothing feels open, the least charged place counts.
Breathe with both. One breath, two places. Long exhale. Don't try to fix or blend them. Let both be there.
Wait. Notice if a third sensation shows up that belongs to neither: warmth, a softening, a pulse, stillness. If nothing comes, that's allowed too.
Place a hand on your heart. One more breath.
- What are you saying yes to with your mind while your body says something else?
- Can you tell the difference between energized and revved?
- What if rest isn't the opposite of what you love, but part of it?
